Eljuri’s album ‘La Lucha’ establishes a direct musical connection to her global influences; her Ecuadorian, Lebanese and American traditions.

Especially in dark times of uncertainty and unnecessary violence, an album like ‘La Lucha’ connects us to a hopeful and life-affirming space. It is on this, her third solo production, that Cecilia Villar Eljuri demonstrates her maturity as a songwriter; not afraid to explore different rhythmic horizons.

about

La Lucha (The Fight)
Eljuri’s album ‘La Lucha’ establishes a direct musical connection to her global influences; her Ecuadorian, Lebanese and American traditions. Especially in these dark times of uncertainty and unnecessary violence, an album like ‘La Lucha’ connects us to a hopeful and life-affirming space. It is on this, her third solo production, that Cecilia Villar Eljuri demonstrates her maturity as a songwriter; not afraid to explore different rhythmic horizons. Over the years, she has developed her personal guitar style influ- enced by the likes of many greats including Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Nancy Wilson and Bonnie Raitt and with this album affirms herself as one of the greatest female electric guitar players in the world. Eljuri navigates through musical landscapes ranging from rock and pop-punk, to bolero, reggae, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms, all presented with an elegant and empowered female voice.

Eljuri has continued to perfect and refine her original sound throughout her extensive career. ‘Fuerte’ (2012)
and ‘En Paz’ (2008), her two previous solo albums, are the prelude to ‘La Lucha,’ the newest full-length cd from this singer-songwriter born in Guayaquil and based in New York. ‘La Lucha’ is a contemporary representation of the musical bridge that spans the border between Spanish- speaking brothers and sisters from Latin American and US cultures, the riffs from Eljuri’s guitar are influenced by the exuberant Latin style of Carlos Santana and her powerful voice is reminiscent of greats like Patti Smith, Marianne Faithful and Debbie Harry. With the exception of one song which is sung entirely in English, Eljuri’s lyrics are pre- dominantly in Spanish, and several songs ease back and forth between Spanish and English, the same way she and so many of her fellow Latino immigrants in North America do naturally when speaking at home.
